Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine sterile needles into specific locations called acupoints, just below the skin. This regulates the energy (Qi) flowing in a network of channels promoting the body’s healing powers and restoring a healthy balance. The needles are usually left in place for about 20 minutes restoring the balance and helping to improve your health and well-being.

Some treatments may involve moxibustion where warmth is created by the use of a herb called moxa applied to the needles or the skin. Cupping can also be used where a glass cup warmed by a flame is placed onto the skin thus creating a vacuum effect. This is good for releasing toxins and pathogens and it is a very effective way of treating muscular tightness. Chinese medicine has a whole host of ways to treat people and these are some of them.

Sometimes other related therapies can be used during your treatment, these may include Reflexology, Aromatherapy and Massage; giving you a truly holistic treatment. Reflexology; where gentle non-invasive pressure is applied to the feet which improves the body’s functions encouraging natural healing. Aromatherapy; where Essential oils, the essence of plants and flowers, are used to enhance the treatment.

All these therapies can be used alone or alongside one another to help calm and balance mind, body and spirit.

Acupuncture is a comprehensive system of treatments too broad and extensive to simply list. If you wish to know more about how TCM and Acupuncture may help you, please feel free to call and we can chat about how my treatments may help your particular condition.

Should I tell my GP I am having acupuncture?

You can happily share this information if you want to, there is an increasing awareness of the use of acupuncture by doctors. Many physiotherapists and related health professionals now use a form of acupuncture in their treatment. I may talk with you about contacting your GP in some circumstances and may even refer you to your GP where appropriate.
